Olivier Debré was born in Paris into a family of doctors and artists. He began painting and drawing as a child, then turned to a career in architecture. In 1938, he graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the architecture section, but decided to devote himself to painting.
Debré is one of the leading exponents of gestural abstraction, painting with space and light. He seeks to express emotion without representation.
