Dumas+Limbach is pleased to present "Figurer" a group show exhibition in our Parisian gallery. On this occasion, we will showcase emblematic canvas of Michel Macréau and Antonio Segui.

To depict is to tell. But just as it's proper to tell stories orally, painters depict them in different ways visually.

Here, Antonio Seguí and Michel Macréau offer us two wonderful examples of storytelling.

Both artists have an undeniably narrative universe. Almost social, even anthropological, they tell us the personal and collective stories that shaped their society at the time.

While Macréau focuses on relationships between couples, Antonio Seguí is more inclined to deal with relationships between human beings. The former strives to penetrate the private sphere of relationships by integrating them fully into the collective, while the latter plays on the collective to highlight personal interactions.

A story within a story, in a way, is the adage that best defines the work of these two artists.

Obsessed with the human body, which he tortures, dismembers and sometimes slaughters, Macréau creates a metaphorical universe in which organs are exaggeratedly staged. Rudimentary yet effective, the symbols form the story's common thread.

The eyes, the crosses, the tribal icons - all these elements refer to his personal torments. Relationships, childhood and religion are themes in their own right, and thus occupy a central place in his work. A master of urgent hieroglyphics, of the automatic expression of anthropological ills, Macréau paints with his gut.

Like an outlet, a catharsis, it's a liberating impulse.

In this way, he follows in the footsteps of writer-painters. A pioneer of free figuration, the stories he tells are rambling and metaphorical. Graphical and raw, his brushwork is lively, spontaneous and, above all, highly singular.

Often associated with Jean Michel Basquiat for his primitive universe, Michel Macréau is considered by some as a precursor of urban graffiti.

ANTONIO SEGUI

An Argentinian painter whose humor and satire trace the contours of a myriad of small characters fleshing out a universe as committed as it is mischievous.

Segui offers everyone the chance to interpret or project themselves into this vast human comedy of the 21st century.

Antonio Segui was born on January 11, 1934 in Cordobà, Argentina. Born into a wealthy family, he moved to France in 1951 to study painting and sculpture. However, he retained strong links with his Latin origins, and made numerous trips to South America throughout his life.

Although he describes himself as an independent artist, Antonio Segui is associated with narrative figuration, even expressionism.

Segui claims to have been inspired by Otto Dix and George Grosz, two artists whose work is highly ironic.  Gradually, his figurative art evolved towards the absurd, constructing a kind of theater on which a man in movement, searching for his place in the world, frolics.

"It's up to you to make history".
